Sunlight Foundation

Ever since the Supreme Court overturned 100 years of precedent to declare that the wealthy can buy as many politicians . . . oops, I mean, they can buy free speech (if it’s free, why do they have to buy it?), I’ve been worried about the impact this is going to have on our already non-functional government.  Since it appears that we’ll have to live with these activist idealogue judges for a while, one organization is trying to ensure that we at least know who’s bought and paid for our politicians.  The Sunshine Foundation has proposed a new set of principles to shed light on where all that money is being spent:

  • Require corporations and unions to report independent political expenditures to the FEC electronically
  • Labor Unions should also report to Department of Labor, Corporations to the Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Strengthen lobbying disclosure laws to create real-time online scrutiny of lobbying contacts and meetings
  • Make corporations and unions state in advertising that they bought the ad and that they approve of the ad’s message
  • Monthly instead of quarterly filing of campaign finance disclosures to the FEC
  • Give the Justice Department, FEC and SEC the teeth they need to prosecute anyone who breaks or disregards the rules
  • All information should be online, searchable, sortable, downloadable and machine-readable
